KUROSHIO DOJO

Unlock Your Potential

Kuroshio Dojo is a private martial arts school for those who seek a different standard of training. Here we are all dedicated to self-mastery. Through rigorous training and contemplative study, we cultivate strength of body, clarity of mind, and refinement of character. For us, training is not just physical, it is the uncovering of a lifestyle, mindset, code of honor, and personal philosophy. Through consistent practice, we learn to remain calm under pressure, think clearly in chaos, and respond with intention rather than impulse. These lessons extend far beyond the dojo, shaping how we face challenges in every area of life.

Set in a secluded forest environment, the dojo offers an immersive training experience by giving students the ability to step away from distraction, reconnect with nature, and fully commit to the path.

Kuroshio Dojo is dedicated to providing an exceptional training experience for all students. Our focus is to provide an environment where everyone can grow, learn, become a better human being, and be 1% better than they were yesterday.

The Art Of Self Defense

Martial arts as a sport has become incredibly popular especially in recent years. An increased focus on the "game" has led to less emphasis being placed on self-defense and more time spent collecting medals and competition titles. While we do train and study the sport, and encourage our students to push their limits in competition, one of the central aims of Kuroshio is and will always be to preserve the original intent and focus of these arts, which is self-defense.

CURRICULUM

THE GENTLE ART

Jujutsu is the art of adaptability. Using leverage, timing, and technique to overcome strength. Jujutsu focuses on off balancing your opponent and ground control designed to subdue with efficientcy and precision.

Rooted in the battlefield grappling methods of the samurai, jujutsu encompasses strikes, takedowns, throws, joint locks, and chokes. Our style is a combination of traditional Japanese Jujutsu, Gracie Combatives Jiu-Jitsu, Sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Submission Grappling (NoGi).

Traditional Japanese martial arts fully incorporate weapons. The principle is that your movements should not have to change much if weapons are involved and we always assume that our opponent may be armed. Curriculum ranges from traditional weapons such as sword and staff to defending against knife or stick attacks.

Training focuses on using an attacker’s force against them, emphasizing flow, control, and awareness over brute strength. Students learn both classical methods and modern applications, making it a versatile and effective system for self-defense, physical conditioning, and mental discipline.

THE ART OF DRAWING THE SWORD

Iaijutsu is the traditional Japanese martial art dedicated to the precise drawing of the sword and responding to conflict in a single decisive motion. Through the study of posture, timing, distance, and awareness, practitioners cultivate both physical discipline and mental clarity.

Unlike many modern forms of exercise, iaijutsu training develops the body and mind together. Each movement requires calm focus, controlled breathing, and complete awareness of one’s surroundings. For this reason, the practice is often described as a form of “moving meditation,” where stillness and action exist in balance.

Students study formal techniques known as waza, which have been preserved and transmitted from teacher to student for centuries. These kata represent the distilled knowledge of generations of swordsmen and serve as a method for refining posture, intention, and precision.

At Kuroshio Dojo, instruction draws from the classical teachings of Tosa Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu, a lineage with deep historical roots in Japan. Training emphasizes the fundamentals of drawing, cutting, and returning the sword, while also exploring the deeper principles of timing, distance, and strategy that define the art.

The practice of iaijutsu is not simply about learning how to handle a sword. It is a path of personal refinement, patience, and lifelong study. Through dedicated training, students develop focus, composure, and a deeper understanding of both martial movement and themselves.

Samurai Military Strategy

Natori-Ryu is a classical gungaku (軍学) school of military strategy, survival, and inner cultivation—founded by Natori Masazumi, a samurai officer of the Kii Domain in the early Edo period. Unlike arts focused solely on combat, Natori-Ryu is a comprehensive system of heihō (兵法), the Way of Strategy. Its teachings encompass battlefield tactics, command structure, scouting, fieldcraft, shinobi-no-jutsu (忍びの術), and the deep study of both yōjutsu (陽術 – overt techniques) and injutsu (陰術 – concealed methods).

Codified in historical scrolls such as the Shōninki, Heihō Kadensho, and Ippei Yōkōshō, this tradition offers insight into the mind of the classical warrior—not just how to fight, but how to live, lead, and endure. The teachings span from wilderness survival, fortifications, and concealment, to medicine, mindset, and moral discipline.

Wilderness Survival at our dojo combines the ancient wisdom of the samurai with practical modern day skills to prepare you for life in the outdoors. Students learn how to build shelter, make fire, purify water, track animals, and move silently through natural environments—skills once essential to shinobi and samurai warriors.

We teach both traditional methods rooted in Japanese survival arts and contemporary tools and strategies for real world emergencies. Whether you’re seeking self-reliance, a deeper connection to nature, or the quiet confidence that comes from being prepared, this training will guide you.

At Kuroshio, Natori-Ryu is studied as a living legacy. Training includes the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of the samurai path—where strategy is not just for war, but for navigating the complexity of life. Students learn to see the world clearly, to move deliberately, and to embody the quiet strength of those who walk the shadows with clarity and resolve.

FIND YOUR BALANCE

Meditation at our dojo is more than just stillness—it's a path to clarity, discipline, inner strength, and finding your balance. We teach traditional Zazen, focusing on breath, posture, and presence to calm the mind and cultivate awareness.

In addition, we offer a unique form of katana-based moving meditation, guided by the Five Elements—Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void. Through precise, mindful sword movements, students explore each element’s energy and how it reflects their inner state. This practice draws from ancient samurai traditions and the teachings of Zen Takai Sensei, offering a powerful blend of stillness and motion to forge mental clarity, spiritual depth, and warrior spirit.

Body Conditioning & Fitness

Body Conditioning is an integral part of martial arts training. The exercises and workouts are designed to provide students with an operational fitness.  These routines help the student gain the level of physical wellness necessary to endure the trials of Budo training.
